The motor that built Mr. Evinrude's second outboard career is the 'silvery' Elto that has become known as the Ruddertwin. The motor is stationary and the boat is turned by using a rudder much like an inboard vessel. Cooling is by water forced in the rudder and up to the powerhead.

F or example, we have only one example of this wonderful old outboard motor in collector quality condition available. Many advances were made during Ralph's stewardship and after WW II, the company enjoyed the boom in boating that followed. After 50 years at the helm, Ralph Evinrude retired as chairman of OMC. Ralph died in Stuart, FL in 1986 and leaves his second wife, the actress Frances Langford, to follow in the boating tradition with a large yacht and marina. But after this milestone, the impact of increased government pollution regulations increased costs while sales were declining. This ended with the company filing for bankruptcy in 2000. Seeing an opportunity, Bombardier of Canada acquired the Evinrude assets and the company was reborn in 2001, and is operating successfully today.
