From Michael Seely New York Pebbles proved herself to be one of the toughest and bravest mares in racing history when beating Strawberry Road by a neck in the $2m Breeders' Cup Turf over a mile and a half at Aqueduct on Saturday. 'She's right up therc with the best I've ever ridden', a triumphant Pat Eddery said. 'And that includes Golden Flecce, Grundy and El Gran Senor. Steve Cauthen, the jockey on the runner-up paid Sheikh Mohammed's athletic wonder filly a high compliment when he added: 'How good is Pebbles?
Just look at what she did. She found three lengths more trouble than I did and she still wvon.'
The 14 runners had six bends to negotiate on the tight circuit. And a new track record of 2min 27 sec became a formality as Tony Ives blazed the trail on the front running Teleprompter. Eddery, handling the 2.4-1 favourite with the innate confi- dence of Europe's leading big race rider this autumn, started to move Pebbles up in the back straight. However, the filly still had three in front of her as Greinton swept past Tele- prompter turning for home. Then, just as when the jockey won the 1983 Budweiser Mil- lion on Tolomeo, the Red Seas parted and a free passage appeared tight against the far rail.
Immediately displaying the brilliant acceleration that had seen her win the 1984 1,000 Guineas and also enabled her to beat Slip Anchor so easily in the Champion Stakes, Pebbles qui- ckened to take the lead. Cauthen then launched a powerful attack on Strawberry Road. But the filly kept pulling out extra for a clever win. Mourjane finished third fol- lowed by Laslikari. Last year's winner. Trom Danger Hour and Shernazar, who never threat- ened to land a blow. Of the other European runners, Tele- prompter's stamina gave out after running too freely and Theatrical.
Lester Piggott's mount. Finished a never danger- ous I Ith.
Pebbles' heart warming dis- play certainly set the seal of approval on this extravangaza of international racing, not only withi the crowd of 42,568, but also among the hardened American press corps. 'That's certainly some mare.' Said a veteran of the New York Tirnes.
'Whatever happens in the Turf Classic. Pebbles has been the star of the shiow'. Eddery and Clive Brittain, the men of the moment, werc celebrating in a Penthouse suite on Fifth Avenue above Central Park late on Saturday night. Talking against the fabulous back-drop of the glittering New York skyline. The 33-year-old former champion jockey said: Pebbles and Pat Eddery hold the challenge of Strawberry Road (Steve Cauthen) to wvin the $2m Breeders' Cup Turf at Aqueduct 'There were really no problems, except when she got checked a couple of times in the back stretch. But Pebbles doesn't really stay a mile and a half 'After all this doesn't com- pare with the merit of her Newmarket win.
It was just her class that carried her through. She's so brave. I couldn't help being a little misty-eyed as I was pulling her up'. Brittain was still on Cloud Nine, but as modest and relaxed as ever after a superbly skilful feat of training. 'Pebbles is back hiome in her stable with her boyfriend, Come on the Blues.
They've really taken her to their hcarts in the barn area and my lads have all gone to an hotel for a party.' Sheikh Mohammed has dc- cided to let Pebbles stay in training next season, but she will not run in the Washington International in a fortnight's time. At the start of the afternoon countless seagulls wheeled and dived over the workaday concrete jungle of Aqueduct as the helicopters brought the rich aind powerful in and the band played the national anthem.
The visiting Europeans had their first disappointment when Committed, Vilikaia, Vacarme and Al Sylah proved unable to handle the dirt track and finished unplaced behind Chris McCarron and Precisionist in.the Breeders' Cup Sprint. However, the major set back of the afternoon-came when the blisteringly-fast pace of the Breeders' Cup Mile around such a sharp track proved too much for Shadeed, Rousillon and Never So Bold. The Patrick Biancone-trained Palace Music did best of the forcign raiders coming home strongly to finish second to Cozzene but was subsequently disqualified for interferring with Tsunami Slew and Rousillon and placed ninth. Shadeed had battle on bravely to finish a close fourth, but was then promoted to third. Al Momoon and Shadeed had hurtled to the first sharp bend in an incredible first quartcr time of 22.4sec. After that the 2,000 GOuineas winner was never on an even keel.
Rousillon missed the break and Never So Bold was carried off his legs. Walter Swinburn, Shadeed's rider said: 'He just couldn't handle the turf. Everv time he got into his stride, another bend came up. I had to keep him running to get position.
The trouble started going into the first turn.' Cozzene, ridden by Walter Guerra is a five-year-old grey horse. He is just about the best Morc racing. Page 25 turf miler in the States and had been specially trained by Jan Nerud to improve on his third to Royal Heroine in the race last year. The $3 million Breeders' Cup Classic resulted in an upset in form when Jorge Velasquez brought Proud Truth storming through to beat Gate Dancer by a head. Chiefs Crown, favourite to win this race and the Horse of the Year title finished a tired fiftlh, beaten nearly 10 lengths. The first four winners were Florida bred, Velasquez took the riding honours with a double and there were two 88- year-old owners in the winners' enclosure.
A record total of S27.7 million was staked nationwide, beating the pre- vious record of $26.8 million wagered on this year's Kentucky Derby. Breeders' Cup results Going: fast (dirt) EREEDERS' CUP SPRINT. PRECISIO- NIST (C McCarron): 2. Smile (J Vasquez); 3, Mt Livermore (J Vasquez).

Sterne should carry Wilson out in style By Nlandarin (7Mlichael Phillips) Lester Piggott and Joe Mercet a.e not the only jockeys retiring at thic end of this season. Jim WVilson, a leading amateur for many years, vill also be metaphorically hanging up his boots after he has ridden Sterne for Guy Harwood in the Leeds Amateur Riders Stakes at Folke- stone this afternoon. In reality though, the craggy, pipe-smoking 35-year-old will be doing nothing of the kind because like Piggott he will be turning his attention to training and invariably riding out vith his string each morning.
Wilson hopes to send out his first runner, his vife's 10-year- old Wearmouth, from their Genfall Stables at Charlton Kings on the outskirts of Cheltenham either this week or next. During the past 15 years - his first winning ride was on Advocate at Clonmel in Ireland in 1970 -.' ilson has earned both the respect and affection of his fellow members of the weighing room and punters To be the leading rider at Cheltenham during the famous National Hunt Festival is an achievement of vhich any pro- fessional can be proud. When he won the Kim Muir Challenge Cup on Good Prospect, the Coral Golden Hurdle Final on Willie Vumpkins and the National Hunt Handicap Chase on Again The Same in 1980 WVilson became the only amateur to vin the coveted Ritz Trophy Twvelve months later lhe scaled even greater heights when he won the Gold Cup on Little Owl. The horse he owvns vith his brother, having, only the day before won the Coral Hurdle for the third successive time on that grand old Clieltenham favourite, Willie Wumpkins. Earlier this year Harwood, ivho employs onilv the best, provided Wilson with the 200th winner of his career wlhen Effigy ran away with the Royal Sussex Stakes at Goodwood.
Today there will be scores of people vwilling Sterne to give him the best possible send off. As Piggott conceded only last week, nobody does you any favours even on your last day and Wilson will certainly expect none. So, while conceding that sentiment plays no part at all in predicting results, I still feel that STERNE will be his 205th wvinner overall.
Only lightly raced because of the problems that beset Pulborough earlier this year, Sterne still did sufficient in the second of his twvo races last autumn when he was runner-up to Si Signor at Haydock Park to suggest that he would recover some of the 2,400,000 francs that his owner gave for him at Deauville when he was i yearling. At Hamilton Park a fortnighit ago that early promise finally bore fruit vhen on his belated first appearance of the season Sterne won by eight lengths.
At Newmarket on Saturday the form was given a boost when the runner-up Eye Flasher was beaten a head by Brave Louise. So now the stage looks set for Wilson to bow out on a triumphant note.
Sterne's companion, EFFIGY, wvho was also entered for the Folkestone race, runs instead in the Wysall Stakes at Leicester with Greville Starkey aboard. Runner-up in his last three races, Effigy certainly deserves to go one better because a slipping saddle cost him a good opportunity at Haydock Jim Wilson: saddling his first r unncr soon -oina: firm craw advantage: 5, 6t, low numbers best 1.0 BURWASH STAKES (Div l: 2-y-o: E547: 6f) (16 runners) i 01 KEDRON (CD) D L-ain9-4.
